North Reno Update

These are before and after photos of 16 approach. The perspectives may be a bit different but it gives you an idea of the change and playability.



North Reno Update October 18th

As of tonight we will have completed the "back corner". Sodding of 14 tee and fairway was completed today. We will proceed to six and seven tee complex then work our way out to numbers eight and nine.

There will be some maturing of the turf that will take place next spring but overall we are very happy with where we are.

North Update

.46" of rain in the last 72 hours; we missed the worst of it but the project will be delayed 2 days. We won't resume sodding until Tuesday of this week (at the earliest) as the nurseries are also too wet to cut sod.

15 green surround and approach were sodded last week as was 3 tee. We are making good progress on all areas and still anticipate completion this fall. No specific date for opening in 2014 but all indications are that we can open in the spring.

One half of the native (fescue) area between 12 and 14 was seeded with fescue and winter (red) wheat. The wheat will provide a cover crop until next year when the fescue can take over.

North Course Update

Lots of activity as we enter the Red Zone ... we just need to punch it in as we approach October.

The seawall is complete
Irrigation on #15 is complete; we begin drainage and sand capping next week; still 21 days from completion
1, 10, 2 & 4 tee complexes will be sodded by next Monday.
The bunkers on 1, 5, 3, & 11 are complete
The fairway expansions on 5 & 11 are complete
The tees seeded 2 weeks ago look good: 5, 11, 12, 17, 18.
13 tee and 15 tee are slow and we may chose to sod these two

The completed tee complexes and bunkers look wonderful and we're excited for you to enjoy the course next year. Right now my best appraisal for opening is May 15th, weather depending. If we can open earlier we will.

North Reonovation Update

A lot has happened in the past two weeks:

• Tees 13, 5, 11, 18 have been seeded
• Bunkers on 11 fairway are nearly complete; 5 fairway will be finished by next week
• OHCC staff has been expanding fairways using aerification plugs
• 15 fairway has germinated
• The seawall at the new pond is complete; finish work begins today
• Cart paths on 15 & 16 are complete
• 1/10 tees will be sodded next Tuesday

Our staff has been working late into the evening to complete our portion of the work. They deserve a big thank you for making the necessary sacrifices. John and Stephen have been left alone on the South Course to keep our Championship 18 in great condition.

I would anticipate a mid-May opening for the North Course in 2014.

North Renovation Update

Last Friday gave us 2.75" of rain and set us back nearly 1 week. Yesterday, we finished reseeding the damaged areas around 12/15/17 tee complexes. 

The washouts from Friday are considerably less than one would expect from 2.75” of rain on open/ungrassed ground. The drainage that was installed at the top of 15 fairway worked well as designed and constructed, as it captured and removed a LOT of the surface water … again on open ground.

At some point during this project a large rain event was going to happen and it shows us how water will move and allows us the opportunity to make any changes while we still can … very positive for us.

The PG held up well with no washouts. The member feedback from my tours has been very positive regarding the PG.

Few of the aerification “plugs” along 16 green moved and this area is progressing nicely as is the area on 12 fairway.

The trees to be used as screening along #8/#9 and behind #9 green have been selected, tagged and will be dug and planted in the next two weeks … ahead of schedule.

The steel wall work is progressing and the contractor – having had a slight rain setback – is continuing work.

Saturday, September 7th we finished seeding and hydromulching the top 1/2 of hole 15.

North Reno Update

We are adding 2 acres of fairway space, mostly in the "member" landing zones. In most areas, this is being accomplished by using aerification plugs. It is labor intensive but saves us some money on sod. More importantly, it provides a seamless transition between the existing turf and the new expansion. Sod can take 3 or 4 years to blend in but by using aerification plugs we are establishing an identical stand of turf in the new expansion zones.

The PG was seeded on August 20th.

Next week:
Cart path around hole 13 - about 1,000 feet of 10 ft wide path.

Renovation Update

Much has happened in the last week. Our challenge continues to be the area in 15 fairway where the old pond was located. We may need to slightly delay this portion of the work but the overall project schedule will not be impacted.

The soil mix (80% sand/20% organic compost) on the Putting Green was installed this week. The new PG is 7,100 square feet and seeding is scheduled for August 16th.

The new well on 13 tee is operational and will supply us with 500 GPM for our irrigation system.

When to Prepare Putting Greens

The preparation of putting greens should always be done considerably in advance of seeding, to allow ample time for the sinking of soil and the smoothing over above the drains. If it is intended to sow greens in the fall. it is best to construct them in the early summer.

North Putting Green

We will finish shaping the base of the new North Putting Green (PG) today. The base will exactly mimic the final surface grade. The old PG was 3,500 ft2 with less than 3,000 ft2 usable; the new PG will be 7,200 ft2 with 6,700 ft2 of surface usable for practice.

The new PG will be seeded to Penncross bentgrass, an older variety. The existing North greens were seeded to Penncross in 1969 so this will give us the best chance to have a new PG that closely resembles the greens on the course.

We are adding parking space for 10 golf carts too.

North Reno Update

You may have noticed the North Course turning "brown". We have intentionally "turned off" the irrigation system. We are irrigating greens only. Letting the golf course dry out is healthy for the turf: the weak species die and the healthy ones will fill in any bare spots. It also helps to have a firm golf course as it minimizes construction traffic damage. All of this turf will recover in time for opening in 2014.

We continue with earthmoving on #15. A total cut of 6 feet was made in the fairway to provide the dirt needed to fill the lower area.

We started #17 fairway bunker complex and #16 greenside bunker reshaping.

The pond will be excavated this week and we will also start the PG construction.
