Fertilizing Fairways

Now is the time to think about fall fertility. The next 4 - 6 weeks is the perfect time for cool season grasses to recover from the stress of summer and the grass plant requires an available food source (Nitrogen) to make that happen.

If fertilizing at the beginning of this fall cycle, a 100% coated (slow release) product is best so that the Nitrogen is available throughout the month of September into early October. It also reduces the burn potential if using a slow release (coated) fertilizer in August.

A coating refers to a covering applied to a product to modify or enhance its properties. In the case of fertilizers, it controls the release of nutrients in to the soil. The heavier the coating, the slower and longer the release rate.

This week we are fertilizing the fairways on both courses to help prepare the turf for fall aerification and to facilitate recovery from a difficult summer.

  1. How often do the greens and rough get fertilized? Are they different from the fairways?

  2. Heidi, greens get fertilized every 2 weeks or so and the rough gets done twice per year, on average. Depending on the needs of the turf, all areas are fertilized differently.
