Preventing Winter Damage to Greens

Removing snow helps prevent excess water accumulation when the snow melts. Melting snow turns to ice ... and extended ice cover causes the most risk to greens. It takes 3 staff members 2 days to remove all of the snow from the South greens.

The South greens have a high percentage of annual bluegrass, a species highly susceptible to ice damage. The North greens have a high bentgrass population and therefore are not usually at risk of winter damage.

The greens we uncovered today look good and ... thus far ... I do not anticipate any damage.
